This variety was very likely originated in the mountains of the north of Puebla and Hidalgo, in México. Henceforth, its name.

The level of heat is intermediate: around 30,000 SHU. The serranito, cultivated in the plains of the Gulf of Mexico, is widely appreciated by mexicans.

The plant has usually 5 or 6 stalks. The height is around 40 and 90 cm. The leaves have got a slight fuzz and are intermediate green, around 8 cm. long, and between 1 and 2 cm. wide. The plant, which forms itself in around 3 months, offers up to 3 harvests when planted early, with an average of 50 fruits each.

The serrano is consumed generally inmature, although we here in PacoPica like it mature and red as well, for it offers a slight acid and sweet flavour. It is an excellent option for salads. It is the maing ingredient of the "salsa cruda o pico de gallo", as well as good one for stews, soups and salads. You may use it for example for a "salsa ranchera" or "chalupas poblanas".
